Canterbury Tertiary College places to treble

Young Cantabrians will have more opportunities to start training for their careers while completing secondary school, after education minister Anne Tolley said Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) places will treble next year.

Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT), as the leading provider of CTC, currently has 148 places for students studying trades such as carpentry, electrical engineering and automotive.

Next year, more subjects and places will be available for 550 students.

CTC director Fiona Haynes says, “This is an exciting collaboration of the vocational providers in Canterbury to ensure that students complete a minimum of Level 2 NCEA studies, while also beginning their pathways towards a vocational qualification.”

As well as providing cost-effective opportunities for young people, the training and education initiative responds to helping the rebuild of Christchurch in the coming years.
