EDUVAC Book Review

Using stories to help children by counsellor and parent coach, Liz Maluschnig, is a book for parents, caregivers, teachers and counsellors.

It contains 12 short stories addressing different life issues that concern two to 12-year-olds.

Topics include: birth of a new sibling, absent parent, foster homes, parental separation, family violence, giftedness, disabled sibling, bullying, sexual abuse and death of a parent.

Each story has an accompanying adult page and copying individual stories to give to parents or caregivers is permitted.

Maluschnig says when children are going through a difficult time, adults often focus on the behaviour being unaware of the depth of feeling that is being communicated within the behaviour.

Her manual uses stories to validate children’s experiences and gives them tools to name their feelings and strategies to deal with them.
