League and literacy make for reading warriors
The ‘League in Libraries’ programme is back this year with Rugby League player Jerome Ropati encouraging Y4 and Y5 students to write an illustrated short story or poem that creatively incorporates their favourite Vodafone Warriors player.
The initiative aims to improve the literacy levels of primary school children and make reading fun and enjoyable.
“Breaking free of a scrum, ball in hand, and tackling the opposition before touching down a winning try is like reading your favourite story and reaching the happy ending, before closing the book knowing you’ve done a good job,” says Jerome.
Entries close this coming Friday, 25th March, 2011. There will be two winning schools from each Auckland region, with a total of eight schools Auckland wide.
The schools will have a special ‘League in Libraries’ afternoon hosted by Jerome Ropati and members of the Vodafone Warriors, at one of four local libraries in May.
