Protected social network for kids launched
A new protected, online social learning network for under 13-year-olds named SuperClubsPLUS was launched in NZ schools last month.
SuperClubsPLUS is an online community for primary-aged children that acts as a training ground as they learn how to be responsible, keep safe and have fun online.
What separates SuperClubsPLUS from other social networking sites for children is that it requires the permission from parents and age verification via schools prior to children joining. The site is also constantly monitored by trained mediators who ensure there is no occurrence of inappropriate behaviour or cyber-bullying.
The NZ launch followed a pilot study of SuperClubsPLUS in 23 NZ schools, which involved 2,200 children. The pilot has shown the value of the programme in preparing children to be good citizens of the internet and to protect them, while they develop the awareness of, and the skills to handle, online dangers.
The pilot was monitored by the Moe and Netsafe. The SuperClubsPLUS community provides young children with an environment where they can meet friends and express themselves by creating their own personalised content, homepages and clubs.
Whilst online, they can connect with other students in monitored forums, join clubs and participate in challenges and competitions. Most importantly, they can do all these things knowing that they are safe with the support from highly trained staff.
