Auckland school teams dominant in chess tournament
The NZ inter-school chess team tournament, held in Palmerston North, during the weekend 26th-27th September, 2009, attracted enthusiastic chess players from around the country.
In the secondary tournament, Auckland Grammar School won the national title for the sixth time in eight years. Led by top junior, Daniel Shen (aged 13), Auckland Grammar’s team of four scored 24/28 in the seven rounds, with Palmerston North Boys’ High “B” (19/28) and “A” (17.5/28) teams securing second and third place respectively.
Auckland teams dominated the intermediate tournament, with Somerville (21.5/28), edging out Remuera (20.5/28) and Rangeview (20/28).
Milford narrowly won the primary tournament, scoring 21/28, with Blockhouse Bay (19.5/28) and Eastern Hutt (17/28) taking second and third place respectively.
