New medal for those killed by terrorism
The United Kingdom government has announced that there will be a new medal, the Elizabeth Cross for British armed service personnel who died as a result of Terrorism.
The Cross and Memorial Scroll will be issued for any deaths at the hands of terrorists dating back to the 1st January, 1948. The award will also include those soldiers who died in the Palestine conflict after the 27th September, 1945.
In a message to her Armed Forces, Her Majesty the Queen said: “It seemed to be a right and proper way of showing our enduring debt to those who are killed while actively protecting what is dear to us all.”
The Elizabeth Cross will be made of silver and will bear England’s rose, Scotland’s thistle, Ireland’s shamrock and the Welsh daffodil. The reverse of the cross will be engraved with the name of the person in whose memory it is granted.
