Kapiti gifts a full set of its inaugural collection

A set of limited edition prints from the 2008 Kapiti Collection was gifted to One Tree Hill College – a low-decile school with a remarkable collection of NZ art, at the end of Term Two.

The college’s art collection began in 1969 when visionary principal Murray Print gave his art teacher Wally Crossman permission to use tuck-shop profits to build an art collection.

In March this year, the collection received national media attention when it was exhibited to celebrate the renovation of One Tree Hill College, formerly Penrose High School. It caught the eye of the team at Kapiti who commissioned the inaugural Kapiti Collection.

“It was a privilege to offer a full set of the five Kapiti Collection artworks. The college has an enviable collection of NZ artworks to inspire the students,” says Gina Klarwill, senior brand manager for Kapiti.

The Kapiti Collection is an artistic series that pays homage to Kapiti. The five works were created by leading contemporary artists Dick Frizzell, Robert McLeod, John Reynolds, Jenny Dolezel and Philip Trusttum.

Each piece was inspired by the vision, ‘Every Piece a New Zealand Original’ and one of Kapiti’s hero cheeses – Aorangi, Mount Hector, Kikorangi, Ramara and Tuteremoana Cheddar.

One Tree Hill College principal Iva Ropati was delighted to accept the offer.

“Art is valued as a rich part of the fabric of the college. It is particularly exciting given that these are the first new additions to join the collection since the re-opening of the college,” said Mr Ropati.

“The presence of these five artworks represents a great opportunity for our students to engage with contemporary art.”
