Free career tips for young people for getting ahead

“I’ve always loved what I do, because I did what I loved,” says John Cowan, writer and presenter with Parents Inc.

Mr Cowan’s own career paths have been passion-led he says.

“I loved photography so I became a photographer, I was intrigued by science and I became a medical scientist. For more than 25 years my passion for understanding families and relationships has kept me absorbed in fascinating work including working with families and teaching parenting skills.”

Mr Cowan, and founder of Parents Inc. author Ian Grant, are presenting three “Get a Life” talks for Wintec at the institute’s city campus in Hamilton, at Thames, and Otorohanga.

The free sessions are designed for young people, and their parents, to help them plot a course for the future with career planning. They are designed primarily for young people seeking guidance about training opportunities generally.

Mr Cowan said there are simple techniques which can help young people feel empowered by making choices that have extremely positive outcomes for the rest of their lives.

He believes often young people are interested but don’t believe they can control their lives.

These talks are designed to provide some hints and tips to enable that process to take place, providing the tools to enable young people to actively pursue positive career outcomes rather than just settle for whatever comes along.

The seminars will be lead by Mr Grant and Mr Cowan and are entitled “Design a Life – tips on discovering your passion and plotting a course to a great future”.

The seminars are being held at:

• The Big Apple – Otorohanga/Te Kuiti Highway on Tuesday 26th May at 7.00 p.m. – John Cowan.

• Wintec’s City Campus Events 1 Hamilton on Wednesday 27th May at 7.00 p.m. – Ian Grant.

• Thames – Civic Centre on Wednesday 27th May at 7.00 p.m. – John Cowan.
