Kristin opens Middle School Learning Centre

It was a long-awaited day of celebration at Kristin School as Prime Minister John Key performed the official opening of Kristin’s new Middle School Learning Centre (MSLC) on Friday 27th March.

The impressive MSLC stands proudly at the front of the Kristin School grounds in Albany. It houses a number of large classrooms, the main Middle School Office, meeting and social spaces.

The Kristin staff and students were joined by those involved in the construction as well as parents, principals of neighbouring schools, Kristin Board members, Kauri Club Alumni and Northern Ward councillor Joy Brett, while Mr Key cut the official ribbon and unveiled a plaque to open the building.

Guests enjoyed a Powhiri, Haka and entertainment by students as well as speeches from executive principal Peter Clague and Mr Key. Tours of the building followed.

“This is a building for students,” says Middle School principal, Ted Berry.

“Their needs drive its form and function. Our place will be here in 100 years and much learning will take place in this time.”

Designed by architects Bren Morrison and Sarah Hewlett-Diprose from Warren and Mahoney Architects, the new space was a three-year project. Bren and Sarah spent this time patiently listening to students and staff in order to create a fully functional space.

The structure covers 1708 square metres of floor space, classrooms are filled with natural light and plenty of display areas. Thought has gone into the details; walls are covered in a texture that is not damaged over time by constant changes in the students’ work on show.

Bright, modern colours are used throughout, storage is ample; PE gear can be stored in vented cupboards and the latest in educational technology has been installed for the students’ benefit: including interactive White-boards, TV screens and wireless connectivity.

The structure is two-storied to maximise the area of land available and to ensure an efficient footprint. The offices are open and welcoming, including the Principal’s!

The entire building reflects the wonderful energy that exists in the Middle School.
