DANZ National Training Programme

DANZ proudly announces the second year of their national training programme which follows on from the successful 2008 series. These workshops cover new topics with wider geographic spread.

The workshops cover teaching skills from studios to the community, promotion and getting your message across as well as some specific workshops relating to Maori, Samoan and contemporary dance.

We take pleasure in supporting the development of NZ dance.

Studios in the  21st Century 2

Promotion and getting your message across – how are you communicating what you do and the benefits of dance to your target clients and audience? For studio, freelance and community teachers. Tutor: Phil Reid of Message Traders Publicity Wellington. Wellington Tuesday 24th March, Christchurch Friday 3rd April, Auckland Friday 17th April, 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.

Working in Schools and Community

A general introduction to working in the school and community – the dance environment, approaches to dance, good practice, support and resources. For freelance, community and studio teachers. Tutor: Sue Cheesman, Dance Educator and Animateur. Hamilton Saturday 2nd May, Dunedin Sunday 21st June, 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Working in Schools 2

Lesson planning, meeting curriculum needs through dance and best practice teaching. This workshop follows on from the 2008 general introduction. For freelance, community and studio teachers. Tutor: Sue Cheesman, Senior Dance Educator/Lecturer University of Waikato. Wellington Friday 17th April, Auckland Friday 5th June, Christchurch Saturday 20th June, 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Perfect Performance 2

The focus this year is on understanding the body, building postural awareness, flexibility and core body strength through Pilates. For teachers of dance. Tutor: Tania Huddart, Pilates and studio dance specialist. Wellington Sunday 1st March, Auckland Sunday 29th March, Christchurch Sunday 26th April, 12 noon to 6.00 p.m.

Talk, Count, Breathe and Teach

Hosted by Top of the South dance network. Class structure, essential ingredients for the successful class (e.g. warmup, use of space, motivation techniques), teaching
principles and skills. For aspiring and established dance teachers. Tutor: Tania Huddart, Pilates and studio dance specialist. Nelson Saturday 28th February, 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

The Art of Teaching Contemporary Dance

In association with the NZ School of Dance. Four day professional development programme where master tutors who have developed a distinct contemporary dance vocabulary/technique share their knowledge. For teachers of contemporary dance and others with an interest. Tutors: Leigh Warren (Australia), Michael Parmenter and Liz Davey. Wellington Saturday 13th to Tuesday 16th June.

Kapa Haka Wananga

How to teach kapa haka. For tutors in community and schools. Tutors: Tihi Puanaki and Te Huaki Puanaki, master tutors in kapa haka. South Island September/October (venue and date to be confirmed), 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Tea & Talk with Susanne Linke

In association with the Auckland Festival and TAPAC. Choreographer Susanne Linke is one of Germany’s most influential dance icons. This forum is an opportunity to hear this pioneer of German dance theatre talk about her work. For everyone with an interest. Auckland Sunday 22nd March, 5.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Free but registration is essential.

Celebrate Pasifika DANZ workshops

In association with Celebrate Pasifika. Samoan Dance workshop with Charlene Tedrow 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon. Samoan Dance in Schools with Sefa Enari 1.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. For everyone with an interest. Auckland Saturday 28th March at Metro Theatre, Massey Road, Mangere.

DANZ Choreographic Conference

In association with Playmarket Aotearoa Playwrights Conference and The Edge. Forums on producing and choreographing dance. Discussion on joint performing arts issues with theatres, producers, Creative NZ and DANZ. For experienced choreographers, directors and producers. Auckland Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th March, 8.45 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
