Last call for adventurous Kiwi teachers

Just eight chances remain for Kiwi teachers to embark on a life changing opportunity to experience the challenges of teaching in poverty stricken Zambia with the 2009 ChildFund Global Schools programme.

ChildFund Global Schools is currently selecting 24 NZ teachers to participate in a two way exchange that will raise awareness and generate a true understanding of the importance of education in the developing world.

Holly Norton from Wellington’s Samuel Marsden Collegiate School has already secured her place for 2009.

She says, “Learning about other places and cultures is vital if we are to develop students who respect and value diversity, and are interested in improving the world around them.”

Ms Norton and her fellow teachers will travel to Zambia in July next year, spending 10 days in rural Zambian schools interacting with the students, teachers, and their communities. They will teach alongside the local teachers, sharing their knowledge and techniques.

Later in the year, a small group of Zambian teachers will then visit NZ to experience our education system, providing Kiwi students with a valuable cultural experience and opportunity to learn about the issues affecting developing nations from a personal perspective.

Participating schools commit to a fund-raising target of $15,000 per teacher, which provides much needed resources as well as funding ongoing professional development work in Zambian schools.

Interested teachers are invited to contact Sally Hewlett at ChildFund for more information, sally@childfund.org.nz or 0800 223 678.
