Christchurch and West Coast to give pre-health programme
Tai Poutini Polytechnic is excited to be announcing their new Certificate in ‘Pre Health Science’ which will give students a taste-test into the world of nursing, midwifery or applied sports science.
The West Coast polytechnic has joined forces with Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) to give students a pre-requisite programme option before going on to study Nursing at CPIT or further Bachelor programmes in the health field.
Comprising eight different subjects including introduction to chemistry, cells and tissues and six other related academic studies the 18-week Certificate in Pre-Health Science is a mix of classroom and on-line study.
Programme co-ordinator Roderick Turner says having the association with CPIT saves students on the West Coast time and money before committing themselves to a higher level of study, as well covering a wide range of learning areas.
“Students can still live at home and save money while deciding if health is the right industry for them. Once they decide and complete the Certificate, it provides an entry point into CPIT Bachelor programmes such as the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery, or Bachelor of Applied Science,” Mr Turner says.
Tai Poutini Polytechnic is offering no tuition fees for 2009, making it a great opportunity for people to study without accruing hefty student loans. This contrasts with the majority of other NZ polytechnics which charge annual programme fees.
“It’s an attractive way for someone who wants to do well at school and get a taste of what the health industry is all about,” Mr Turner says.
On completion, the programme helps fill current market demand for nurses on the West Coast. The programme is held once every six months.
