Pupils “meet the locals” to win a wildlife experience

In September to support Conservation Week, the Royal Society of NZ’s environmental education programme, EMAP (Environmental Monitoring and Action Project), ran a competition which gave schools the opportunity to win a wildlife experience of their choice.

This year’s theme was ‘Meet the Locals’. The competition asked schools to send in video clips, photographs or a blog describing their experience of meeting a ‘local’ freshwater or marine creature and explain why it is important to protect the creature and its environment.

The winners of the competition are Otama School in Southland and Devon Intermediate in New Plymouth. Each school will receive $250 dollars to spend on a trip to a local wildlife attraction of their choice.

EMAP is a nationwide environmental education programme, funded by the MoE through its LEOTC Fund, which provides resources and expertise supporting schools to engage in environmental monitoring.
