Conference targets young people’s learning

Parents Inc founder John Cowan will discuss the issues facing children and teenagers in today’s society at a University of Waikato conference next month.

The University of Waikato’s Continuing Education Centre is running the October 18th-20th conference. Advisers put together the symposium called Current and Future Issues Facing our Children after the success of a recent seminar about men’s learning.

This conference is designed for teachers, parents, social workers, career advisors and youth group leaders.

Keynote speakers include Hamilton Boys’ High School principal Susan Hassall and John Cowan of Parents Inc, the not-for-profit organisation which aims to make life better for parents and their children.

Also speaking will be other school principals, University of Waikato academics, MoE staff, and Marcus Akuhata-Brown who speaks around the world about addressing the learning and developmental needs of youth at risk and young offenders. He trained as a teacher at the university.

Workshop topics during the three-day conference include gifted boys; migrant students; boys need love too; understanding NCEA; avoiding green angst; sibling rivalry and adjusting parenting styles to suit the age of the child.

The cost is $100 for two days or $125 for three days. Contact the Continuing Education advisers on 07-858 5207 or 07-858 5211.
