‘Carless Daze’ exhibition

Carless Days were introduced to NZ by the Sir Robert Muldoon led National government in July 1979 to address the oil shortage.

Lasting less than a year, the scheme directed all private motor vehicle owners to refrain from using their cars on one day of the week. It was up to the car’s owner to choose a day which best suited them.

The Carless Days scheme was unsuccessful and finished in May 1980.

Following on from MOTAT’s recent ‘Exploring Energy’ museum experience, this exhibition takes a retrospective look at this notable period in NZ’s history in the light of today’s ever-increasing energy issues.

The exhibition opened on 5th August for a limited season, in the Energiser Building (beside the Pump House), MOTAT, Great North Road, Western Springs, Auckland.
