Plunket supporting more families

In the midst of a recent baby boom in most areas of NZ, Plunket has seen a significant increase in the number of enrolments over the last year – and continues to provide support for over 92 per cent of young families.

Statistics New Zealand figures up to March 2008 indicate an increase of five per cent in the annual birth rate.

Over the last year, Plunket staff have made 544,000 face to face visits with families, an increase of three per cent from the previous year. PlunketLine staff have responded to a record 70,000 calls throughout the year, up from 55,000 last year.

This increase in the number of contacts and visits continues a significant growth in support and services provided to families around NZ over the last five years: a total of 29 per cent more visits and contacts with families, which includes a 48 per cent increase in contact with Maori, and 58 per cent for families with higher needs.

With increases in government funding for Well Child services over the last five years, Plunket has been able to improve access to support and services through more home visits – providing additional support for families that need it most.

Plunket is in discussion with the Ministry of Health about increasing funding for Well Child services to reflect the increase in births.

“We want to be able to provide even more support to ensure every child gets the best start in life,” says Plunket’s CEO Paul Baigent.

“In our Five Years for Under Fives future focus we are calling for double the investment from government, business and the community over the next five years to enable a significant expansion in Well Child services and community based support.”
