MIT scoops national award for Maori Language Week
Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) has won the Tertiary Institution Award for its excellent work around promoting the use of the language and appreciation of the culture during national Maori Language Week.
This is the second year running that the institute has succeeded at achieving this recognition.
The Maori Language Week Awards were held in Wellington on Friday, 14th September to recognise the efforts of organisations that promoted Maori Language Week from 23rd to 29th July, 2007.
MIT festivities to celebrate the week included a Marae Idol competition at Nga Kete Wananga Marae, the launch of the Te Reo Coffee Club, a once-a-week opportunity for staff and students to relax in an immersion environment and speak te reo, and a bilingual quiz night comprising teams of four.
Other nominees for the 2007 award in the tertiary institution category were Victoria University and Wintec.
